Purpose of Establishing the Port Authority
Under Presidential Decree 128/2001 (Government Gazette 113A/6-6-2001), the responsibilities of the Dodecanese Port Authority for the municipalities of Archangelos, Atavyros, Afandou, Ialysos, Kallithea, Kamiros, Karapathos, Kasos, Lindos, Megisti, Southern Rhodes, Petaloudes Rhodes, Symi, Halki, and the Community of Olympos in Karapathos were transferred to these municipalities and community. This led to the establishment of a public law entity named the "Municipal Port Authority of Southern Dodecanese," based in the Municipality of Rhodes. Additionally, Presidential Decree 290/2003 (Government Gazette 247A/29-10-2003) transferred the responsibilities for the Municipality of Tilos from the Municipal Port Authority of Kos to the Municipal Port Authority of Southern Dodecanese.
This transfer of responsibilities streamlines the operations of the ports, which are critical to the economic life of Rhodes and the islands under our jurisdiction.
The Municipal Port Authority of Southern Dodecanese is entrusted with providing essential public services and supporting the commercial, passenger, maritime, tourism, and fishing sectors. It also ensures the smooth operation of the ports under its care and contributes to the economic, social, cultural, and tourism development of Rhodes and the other islands, in collaboration with relevant local stakeholders and port authorities.
